Advocating for the Common Good Nationally
United Way of America's Public Policy Agenda focuses on long term solutions and goals
United Way of America is the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement. United Way of Elgin, along with all other local United Ways, is creating longlasting community change by addressing underlying causes of the most significant local issues. Our focuses locally are successful kids, safe
and vibrant neighborhoods, and strong families.
United Way of America is working nationally to advocate for change and challenge our systems, including government, to create opportunities for a better life for everyone.
United Way engages in public policy advocacy because we recognize that it is our civic obligation to use our experience and knowledge to help inform policy-makers’ decisions regarding policy and funding of government human services programs. United Way is a policy leader in the nonprofit community because we focus on long-term solutions. We remain neutral and non-partisan in advocacy, urging law makers to set aside partisanship and to work together. United Way uses its convening power -- bring together all our partners: business, labor, nonprofits, and activists -- to help find policy compromises to Advance the Common Good.
United Way of America’s Policy Agenda for the 111th Congress works toward the best possible government policies to fulfill these goals:
By 2018, we as a nation must:
- Cut in half the number of young people who dropout of high school
- Cut in half the number of lower-income families that lack financial stability
- Increase by one third the number of youths and adults who are healthy and avoid risky behaviors
