United Way of Elgin Gets Parents Involved at a Local Elementary School
Highland Elementary program continues to be successful
In 2007, the United Way teamed up with Highland Elementary School and the Prairie Valley Family YMCA - Taylor Branch to pilot a Parental Engagement Program. Studies have shown that children need multiple opportunities to learn and grow -- not only in school, but at home and in the community as well. Quite often, however, parents don't know how they can help.
Our Parental Engagement Program helps to guide and support parents so they can take an active role in their children's success. Because of the 2009 program at Highland Elementary:
- 81.8% of parents attended at least one parent education event
- 98% of parents attended parent/teacher conferences
- 14% of parents volunteered in their child's classroom
- 18% of parentss participated in integrated ESL & computer classes
- 93% of parents stated they are more confident in their communication with the school
Steve Johnson, Highland Elementary School Principal, is pleased with the program's outcomes and looks forward to future successes.
