Community Crisis Center helps find a new life free of violence
Janice had lived with her boyfriend for five years. Over the years she had experienced an unhealthy relationship. She encountered severe physical abuse and isolation from family and friends.
Following another physical attack Janice knew that she needed help. Janice went to the Community Crisis Center, a United Way partner agency in Elgin that provides a safe shelter to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. She needed assistance in obtaining an Order of Protection.
With the help of the Crisis Center’s legal advocates, Janice obtained an emergency order of protection. She participated in counseling sessions where she learned about power and control and the cycle of violence, and also how to trust her feelings and her right to live without abuse. When the order of protection was violated, she found the strength to report it to the police. Janice has grown in self- confidence. She joined a support group at the Crisis Center where she shares what she learned with others in the group to continue to move forward with her own personal goals.
The Crisis Center’s Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program receives funding from the United Way of Elgin. Thanks to our donors’ generosity Janice, was given a fresh start. Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program serves about 3,750 women and children each year.
