To Haiti, With Love, From Elgin, Illinois

Dear Friends of The Salvation Army,

Our hearts have been deeply touched and troubled by the news of destruction, death and disease that hundreds of thousands of people are facing in Haiti. Most are Haitians, and there are still 5,500 Americans in Haiti that remain missing.   (That is more than the number lost on 9/11 and more than the 4,373 killed in Iraq.)  This is a tragedy that cannot, must not and will not be ignored.

The Salvation Army has been activated by the United Nations to set up feeding sites in Haiti. One site has been set up as a tent city and feeding site serving more than 20,000 people per day.

We have initiated plans to help with this massive need on a local level. The Salvation Army is asking for 4,000 Elgin area volunteers to help out with a meal packaging event on the weekend of February 20th and 21st. We will package 1,000,000 meals that will be distributed by The Salvation Army in Haiti. Shifts of 800 volunteers will be needed every two hours on Saturday and Sunday.

The location of this event will not be finalized until next week. You can sign up individually at http://elginsa.volunteerfirst.org. To get a head start - you can fill out all of your registration information and then go back and select your day and time when the Haiti volunteer opportunity is available the end of next week.

The Elgin Salvation Army will also be taking financial donations to offset the costs of the meals and allow The Salvation Army to purchase more meals for the long term need.  Donations can be brought to the volunteer event or sent to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 96, Elgin, IL 60120 marked "Haiti Relief".

Thank you so much for all that we do in Elgin to help those in need.

God bless you.
