Family Service Association
A New Beginning to Life
Sam is an 81 year old man who reported
symptoms of anxiety, depression and social isolation.
Sam stated that he would like to meet new people, but his symptoms
of anxiety and depression often prevented him from going to social events.
He also reported difficulty attending to daily living skills and stated
he frequently felt overwhelmed with paying the bills, grocery shopping
and organizing his house. As these tasks piled up, Sam felt more overwhelmed
and less inclined to go out of the house.
Sam and his therapist worked on an individual treatment plan
to outline Sam’s goals for therapy. Sam worked weekly on relaxation
exercises and had several family sessions to determine how his family
could assist him with grocery shopping, paying bills and snow removal
in the winter.
Sam was assigned to the Family Support Group where they assisted
him in making phone calls, organizing his finances and making lists to
help him feel more organized. The worker also went with Sam on several
visits to activities sponsored by Elgin Senior Services to help Sam feel
more comfortable with social contacts. Sam now attends these activities
on his own and has made a couple of new friends.
Thanks to the assistance of Family Service Association, getting
things organized in Sam’s home, meeting new people and getting more
assistance from his children, Sam’s anxiety and depression have
been alleviated.
After 9 months of treatment, Sam and his therapist agreed that
Sam was ready to end services through Family Service Association. Your
gift to United Way brings results you can see.
